Anime Central 2013 Con Report
Anime Central 2013 Con Report avatar

This was our 13th year at Animecentral.   We were actually well prepared this year, with everything finished by Monday.   We debuted issue seven of The Apprentice  (illustrated by Jim Nelson) and a new stock of elemental design silk Bags of Infinite Possibility.

We also had a brand-new backdrop display with new banners and table cover, as well as new signage.

Set up on Thursday went smoothly and we even had time to feed our friendly DH Phil after somebody stole his sandwich and cookies.  Having accomplished our good deed for the day, we split up for the evening to various amusements.

Alysia ran off to play with con staff, Bon went to watch Star Trek and Christy sat alone in the hotel room.

Melinda worked and wasn’t there.
Friday morning, bright and early, we got up, had breakfast and headed to the Artist Alley.
Artist Alley Friday Quests included:
1) Acquire con badges for Christy and Melinda-completed by Christy
2) Acquire key for cashbox-completed by Bon
Sales were very good on Friday and felt more like Saturday. Time also dragged into infinity. We suspect some con-goer acquired a time bending device for stretching out the con longer. More time appeared to pass than could actually accounted for. Eventually it came time to close down the artist alley, with thanks to all our lovely customers.
From there, Bon closed up shop, while Christy and Alysia headed off to do the Starving Artist Panel.  We had over a dozen rotating attendees who were gracious enough to truly starve during the Starving Artist Panel, as we were scheduled during dinner time. We were vaguely horrified to realize that we were old enough to be the parents or at least babysitters of everyone in the room. We attempted to impart wisdom on working in groups without killing each other. We also gave tips and answered questions on the general business of being in Artist Alley.

After parting ways with the panel attendees we returned to the embassy for a tasty meal in the hotel bar. Filet mignon and crabcake sliders for the win! Alysia returned to her Fortress of Solitude and Christy retired to the hotel room.

Saturday we were joined for breakfast by Melinda and Jim-yea, our third musketeer hath arrived. Then we trundled off to Artist Alley for another day of selling stuff. Due to lack of seating, we took turns tagging each other in and out and roaming the con.
At about 11 AM Alysia’s major quest began:
Rescue her Mom and brother Joel from the Twilight Zone. Did you know there are TWO intersections of Bryn Mawr and River Road in Rosemont? We do now.

After talking Mom through the area for an hour and a half Alysia skipped off to the MAPS meeting.  There was a 10 minute period when she thought nobody was going to come and she could declare herself Queen. Then everyone else showed up and the public board meeting proceeded as normal.
In the meantime, Mom and Joel arrived. Mom was able to get her badge and left Joel outside the dealers hall to search for Alysia.  Christy found him, rescued him from standing there like a mook and sent him to the reg line, where he remained for the next four hours.

Since we thought he had completed his registration in a timely manner and was just pouting, Alysia completed her quest of “find Mom” and took her on a tour of the alley. Alysia informed her mother that these were all her illegitimate grandchildren as she had dedicated herself to being a giant nerd instead of having kids-which pleased her mother once she established that she would not have to purchase birthday presents for all of them.

Once they headed back to the registration area to meet some staff, they found Joel still in line and decided it was time to take the poor man home. Now he knows to say YES when he’s asked if he wants a comp badge.

Back at the table, Christy and Melinda sold books and watch people agonize over the last of the Fire bags. We had a nice share of repeat readers come by and new customers took a chance on our books. The back issue sale helped. Once we closed up shop on Saturday, we met with Jim and had a nice outdoor dinner at a nearby restaurant which we’re not going to name so it doesn’t get full of people. Sorry guys! After dinner, Melinda went home to die while Alysia and Christy went to see the new Lupin TV series and hang with staff in secret locations.
Sunday morning, our group grew larger with the additions of Darrick, Steph, Grant and company for breakfast. Then off to the final day of the con. Again, we played tag all day and did our shopping. Christy almost bought a wookie hoodie for Matt. Alysia spent too much money on comic books. We sold out of Fire bags and made some small sales. The last hour had us selling many back issues to people looking for something to read on the ride home.
All in all, good sales, good con, good time. Shout outs to: Darrick, Stephanie and all the Panda Rage crew; our repeat readers (Elaina-we missed you this year!) Squirrel Creek Creations and Pearson and his caffeinated treats. Thanks to Jim for being a good companion and playing chauffeur.
Till next time,
Kumate Works

Ramencon 2012 Report

We spent the weekend at Ramencon in northwest Indiana.  We shared a table with Jim and had a great time.   The congoers were very friendly and sales were good. It was fun to talk to the attendees-everyone was so positive, especially the drunk guy.

We introduced a new item-silk drawstring bags featuring a new series of images based on the elements.  We sold out of the Fire bags, and have very low stocks of the others.  As soon as we get new silk in, we will make them available on the website.

We got to see many of our friends at this con.  Darrick Chen was selling Onward Bound in the Artist Alley, and Lemonbrat was down the way.  Nick and Molly from Rubber Punk Produktions were also in the dealer’s hall with us, and we finally managed to have dinner.

Unfortunately Min was sick-Boo!  Yay for Jim’s convention efforts.

Honestly, everything went so well that we don’t have a lot to report.  We plan on returning next year and are looking forward to Anime Central next.

Had some family issues over the summer, so we’re a bit behind.  However, we will be at Ramencon this weekend.  We will be in the dealer’s hall, and we will have some new prints and other products for sale. The next Haiku is coming along, but we were not able to get it finished before this con.

Anime Central 2012 Con Report

Kumate Works studio joined Anime Central for its 15 year anniversary this last weekend.  The weekend went by really fast, we don’t remember most of it, but we’ll do our best to relay the highlights.

Set up was Thursday night and went very smooth.  Shout out to IRT for being so kind and courteous for making sure we could come and go as necessary since badges weren’t ready yet.  We didn’t get to sit next to Darrick Chen and Panda Rage, but we were back to back.  Shout out to him and his new book, Dead Man’s Stand.  Also, he was the primary illustrator for our Apprentice 6 book.  Instead we were next to Brad with Chainmail Creations.  Hi Brad!  You were awesome.  Thanks for fixing Alysia’s bag.
We got our room at the Embassy this year.  Yea breakfast!

We had two panels scheduled this year.  Copyright 101 and How Not to Starve as a Starving Artist.  There were some scheduling snafus and issues that resulted in the panels getting bumped around a lot, so we apologize for anybody who didn’t get to attend.  Thanks to everybody who found us and did get to attend.  Fuu promises to post the reference links to Copyright 101 soon.

Friday morning saw Fuu running off to conduct the Copyright 101 panel.  She had about a dozen people and her boss thought to call in the middle.  Apparently, in silencing the phone, she actually turned on the speaker instead and her boss got to listen in for awhile.  Back to the table, shout outs to the contingent of Apprentice fans who stopped by to get the latest book.  No need to run, and yes you can buy them.  Everybody’s money is good at our table.  How Not to Starve as a Starving Artist went well in the afternoon and we ended our day ordering takeout which turned into an adventure for Min and Jim.

Saturday dawned bright and dreary outside, but fortunately no rain yet.  We took turns manning the table.  Fuu treated herself to some comics and DVDs.  Ishi worked on a new painting all weekend, which will be posted once it’s done.  Min sold many, many plushies.  Bon was a good table lackey, who brought Fuu both a sandwich and an Aang cosplayer.  There were some issues with loud music, but considering that was the biggest problem, we think it went well.  An artist did a huge chalk drawing not far from the table, and was awesome.  Shout out to Dirk and congratulations on the card game release.  We managed to miss the fire alarm incident at the Hyatt because Min had gone home with Jim and Fuu and Ishi were enjoying their first experience with room service.  Which was pretty decent, if a bit pricey.  Melt in your mouth filet and tasty crab cake sliders for the win.  We ended up stopping by the hotel, escorting a staff member to EMT after the fire alarm incident and then retiring for the night.

Sunday was pretty quiet.  More comic shopping and Ishi treated herself to a fun pocket watch.  Shout outs to Addy, the girl with the ponies, Allie and Peter and all the other independent comickers.  We were very impressed with the depth, breadth and quality of the work in the alley this year.  Fire and panel issues aside, the con went pretty smooth.  Book sales were not as good as expected, but the preview books we sent around created a lot of buzz, so we’re quite happy with the exposure.  We’re planning to have some new comics in time for our next convention, Ramen Con – as soon as we can get a spot confirmed.  So please come visit us there and check in with the website for further updates.

How Not To Starve As A Starving Artist 2: Who are your customers and where are they hiding?
How Not To Starve As A Starving Artist 2: Who are your customers and where are they hiding? avatar

In the last installment, I ended with this postscript: “I expect a lower volume of art collectors at the cons I frequent, which begs the question of why I attend those conventions.  The reason is that while there is a lower overall volume of art collectors there, they are more likely to purchase my art specifically and I have less competition.”

This post elaborates on and explains this concept.  We use 4 basic questions to narrow down our target audience and where to find them.  This helps us determine which shows to attend, target our marketing efforts, and decide what sort of ancillary products to create.

  1. Who seems the most interested in your work?

  2. What events does each group attend?

  3. Where are the biggest overlaps?

  4. Who is your competition?
