Free Spreadsheets For Managing Your Art Business

When bankers get together for dinner, they discuss Art. When artists get together for dinner, they discuss Money. – Oscar Wilde I have yet to meet an artist that doesn’t feel the need to do a better job organizing their finances. It’s important to keep track of your income and expenditures so you can identify issues, evaluate your product sales, and get your taxes straight. Over the last few years I’ve been putting together a set of spreadsheets to manage our studio finances. It occurred to me that this might be useful to other people, especially those starting out, so…

I’ll go over a few things that have…

Tips For Low Stress Conventioning Part 5 of 5: The Key to Con Prep

The last trick is the simplest, but it’s really the key to de-stressing your convention prep, and allowing you to take advantage of sudden opportunities. 5. Never unpack your con gear. It’s just that simple.  When you do your final test display at home, pack everything up (remember, reverse order, so that the last thing packed is the first thing on the table) and put it away somewhere safe, all together. If you’ve made a checklist, go through it and make sure everything is there. (This is where duplicate supplies come in handy-you won’t be pulling sharpies out of the…

Timelapse-NOLA Courtyard in Casein

Timelapse-NOLA Courtyard in Casein I've been doing some small painting projects while waiting for a diagnosis on my wrist. Painting isn't as difficult as drawing for me right now. When we vacationed in New Orleans, we were upgraded to a room that opened on this fabulous courtyard. A Real-Life Education in Protecting Your Creative Work In a Digital Age

Here's another good article from 99u. Two thoughts from me about this article:

1. You never know what's going to be popular, so take all of your work seriously.

2. Art education desperately needs to start taking law and business seriously. It never fails to amaze me that an artist can have a bachelors degree, and still not understand IP law or basic business concepts.

This isn't normal. A student taking a six month certificate class in other fields will get an overview of the basic laws and regulations of their field. Many art curricula don't include a single class.
